BMW DDE8/DME8 Bench Unlock | For Bosch MG1/MD1 06/2020+
The gateway to more performance. SouthernBM offers specialist BMW DME Bench Unlock services for supported models both prior to 06/2020 and 06/2020 onwards. Earlier vehicles can be unlocked using our proven bench solutions, while supported late-model BMWs equipped with Bosch MG1 DME8/DDE8 control units can now be unlocked in-house at SouthernBM, eliminating the need for overseas shipping and lengthy turnaround times. Covering applications including B38, B48, B58, S58, N63 and S63, our unlock service provides the access required for the next stage of performance tuning.
The Gateway To Tuning Your 06/2020+ BMW, MINI Or Toyota GR Supra
BMW, MINI and Toyota GR Supra models produced from June-2020 onwards use a newer generation of protected Bosch engine control units, also referred to as the DME, DDE or ECU. On supported vehicles, the additional security prevents the same level of tuning access available on earlier models, so the control unit must first be unlocked before compatible tuning or flashing can be carried out. These later-generation control units include Bosch MG1-based DME8 ECUs for petrol models and Bosch MD1-based DDE8 ECUs for diesel models.
SouthernBM can now perform this unlock process in-house at our Melbourne workshop, giving owners of supported 06/2020+ BMW, MINI and Toyota GR Supra models a simple local solution without the previous requirement to send the DME/DDE overseas.
Whether you bring us the complete vehicle, remove the DME/DDE yourself and drop it off, or ship the removed unit to us from anywhere in Australia, we can complete the unlock and get your vehicle ready for the next stage of performance tuning.
Compatible With Popular Tuning Platforms
Once unlocked, supported vehicles can be tuned through the OBDII port using popular tuning platforms including bootmod3, MHD and MG Flasher, as well as compatible custom ECU tuning solutions. This allows future tuning and flashing to be carried out through the vehicle’s diagnostic port.
Tuning platform compatibility depends on the specific vehicle and ECU, and any required tuning licence, software or calibration is separate from the Bench Unlock.
What is a DME8 / DDE8 Bench Unlock?
The factory security built into supported 06/2020+ Bosch MG1-based DME8 petrol ECUs and MD1-based DDE8 diesel ECUs prevents normal tuning access until the control unit has been unlocked.
For the Bench Unlock procedure, the DME/DDE is removed from the vehicle and connected externally through its factory electrical connector. The control unit does not need to be opened. The required unlock is then applied directly to the ECU, allowing supported reading and writing access for compatible tuning and flashing.
The unlock itself is not a performance tune and does not increase power. Its purpose is to remove the access restriction that would otherwise prevent the DME/DDE from being used with a supported tuning solution.
In simple terms, it enables the ECU to be accessed for the next stage of tuning.
Three Easy Ways To Have Your DME Unlocked
Book In Your Vehicle With SouthernBM (Workshop Unlock)
The easiest option for Melbourne-based customers. Simply contact SouthernBM to arrange a booking. Bring the complete vehicle to our Moorabbin workshop and we can handle the process from start to finish, including DME/DDE removal, the Bench Unlock and refitting.
The advertised product price covers the DME/DDE unlock only. Removal and refitting labour is additional and varies depending on the vehicle.
Remove The DME/DDE And Bring It To Us (Bench Unlock Only)
If you're local and comfortable removing the control unit yourself, place your order online first, then contact us to arrange a suitable time to bring the DME/DDE to SouthernBM. If you're not confident with the removal process, we recommend professional removal to minimise the risk of damage to the control unit, connectors or surrounding components.
The Bench Unlock itself typically takes no more than 30 minutes to complete, so in most cases you can wait while the work is carried out.
We recommend contacting us beforehand to arrange a suitable time, so we can have everything ready and complete the unlock while you wait.
Please bring your order confirmation with you so we can match the DME/DDE to your purchase.
Remove The DME/DDE And Ship It To SouthernBM (Mail-In Unlock)
If you're outside Melbourne, place your order online first, then remove the DME/DDE and ship it to our workshop for unlocking. Once the Bench Unlock is complete, the unit can be returned to you for reinstallation. If you're unsure about removing the DME/DDE yourself, we recommend having it removed by an experienced workshop.
Most DME/DDE units received during business hours are unlocked and dispatched back to you the same day, with overnight return shipping used where available. This helps keep vehicle downtime to a minimum, although return timing can depend on courier cut-off times and your location.
Please include your order confirmation and contact details with the DME/DDE when shipping it to us. We also strongly recommend sending the unit with tracking and insurance for its full replacement value. Once shipped, please send us the tracking details so we can monitor the delivery and confirm when it arrives at SouthernBM.
If you're unsure whether your vehicle or control unit is supported, contact us with your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) before placing an order, removing the DME/DDE or shipping anything to us.

Don’t see your vehicle listed? It may still be supported. Compatibility is determined by the specific DME/DDE fitted to the vehicle, rather than the model or build date alone. Send us your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and we can help confirm compatibility.
N63 and S63 V8 models use two engine control units. Only one Bench Unlock purchase is required, however both DMEs must be supplied to SouthernBM for the unlock to be completed.
Are All 06/2020+ Models Supported?
Most 06/2020+ BMW, MINI and Toyota GR Supra applications can be unlocked, but compatibility depends on the specific DME/DDE fitted to the vehicle.
Production dates, ECU hardware and software versions can vary, so the safest way to confirm support is to check the actual control unit rather than relying on the build date alone.
This service is designed for supported Bosch MG1-based DME8 and MD1-based DDE8 control units. Some newer ECU generations may require a different solution that may not yet be available.
If you're unsure, send us your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) before ordering and we can help confirm compatibility for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the DME/DDE need to be opened?
No. The Bench Unlock is carried out through the control unit’s external factory connector, so the ECU case remains sealed and there is no need to access the internal circuit board.
Does the Bench Unlock include a tune?
No. This service covers the DME/DDE Bench Unlock only. A tuning licence, performance calibration, custom tune or flashing software is not included unless specifically stated as part of another SouthernBM package.
The unlock provides the access required for compatible tuning to be carried out afterwards.
Will the unlock give my car more power?
Not by itself. The Bench Unlock does not change boost, power, torque or the vehicle’s calibration. The increase in performance comes from the tune installed afterwards. The unlock simply removes the factory access restriction that would otherwise prevent supported tuning.
Which Bosch ECU types are supported?
The Bench Unlock supports a range of Bosch DME8 and DDE8 ECUs fitted to 06/2020+ BMW, MINI and Toyota GR Supra applications, including MG1CS003 SPC5777M, MG1CS024 TC298, MG1CS049 TC298, MG1CS201 TC298, MD1CP002 SPC5777M, MD1CP032 TC299 and MD1CS001 TC298/SPC5777M.
If you're unsure which ECU is fitted to your vehicle, simply send us your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and we can help confirm compatibility.
Which tuning platforms can I use after the DME is unlocked?
Supported vehicles can be tuned through the OBDII port using platforms including bootmod3, MHD and MG Flasher, along with compatible custom ECU tuning solutions. Platform support varies by vehicle and ECU, so contact us if you're unsure which tuning option is suitable.
What happens if the vehicle receives a software update?
Dealer programming, manufacturer software updates or remote software updates can affect tuning access on some vehicles. If an update removes the existing OBD tuning access, the unlock can generally be reapplied using the appropriate Bench procedure. We recommend contacting SouthernBM before having software updates carried out on an unlocked or tuned vehicle so we can advise you beforehand.
What if my DME/DDE has already been tuned or unlocked?
That’s not necessarily a problem, but contact us before ordering or sending the control unit. If the ECU has previously been unlocked, tuned or had modified software installed, let us know what has been done and provide the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) where possible. We can then confirm the appropriate process before proceeding.
What if my vehicle was built before 06/2020?
This service is intended for supported 06/2020+ Bosch DME8 and DDE8 control units. BMW and MINI vehicles produced prior to 06/2020 will generally use our separate traditional DME/ECU Bench Unlock service for earlier-generation control units.

Why Have Your DME/DDE Unlock Carried Out by SouthernBM?
The DME8/DDE8 unlock can now be completed in-house at our Melbourne workshop, removing the previous requirement to send supported control units overseas.
You can book your vehicle in and have us handle the removal and refitting, remove the DME/DDE yourself and bring it to us, or ship the removed unit to SouthernBM from anywhere in Australia.
Do I need to remove the DME/DDE myself?
No. If you're comfortable removing the DME/DDE yourself, you can do so and either bring the unit to us or ship it to our workshop after placing your order online.
If you're unsure about the removal process, we recommend having the DME/DDE removed professionally to reduce the risk of damage to the control unit, connectors or surrounding components.
Melbourne-based customers can also book their vehicle with SouthernBM, and we can handle the DME/DDE removal, Bench Unlock and refitting. Removal and refitting labour is additional to the advertised unlock price.
How long does the Bench Unlock take?
Once the DME/DDE is ready to be worked on, the Bench Unlock itself typically takes no more than 30 minutes.
If you are bringing a removed control unit to us, we recommend arranging a time beforehand so we can complete the unlock while you wait. DME/DDE units shipped to us are generally unlocked and dispatched back the same day they are received, with overnight return shipping used where available.
Can I drive the vehicle with the DME/DDE removed?
No. The vehicle cannot be driven while the DME/DDE is removed. If you are removing the control unit yourself and bringing or shipping it to SouthernBM, the vehicle will need to remain off the road until the unlocked DME/DDE has been returned and reinstalled.
Is return freight included for Mail-In Orders?
Return freight is additional and will be calculated at checkout based on the delivery address and available shipping options.
What if I’m not sure whether my vehicle is supported?
You don’t need to know the exact Bosch ECU type yourself. Simply contact us with your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and we can help confirm whether the DME8/DDE8 Bench Unlock is suitable before you book, remove the control unit or place an order.
Ordered an oil cooler thermostat yesterday, it’s in my hands today, VIC to WA. Unreal service!
